Curriculum

Supports the Relationships Education and Health Education statutory guidance

Pupils should have the opportunity to learn:

Physical health and fitness

  • the importance of building regular exercise into daily and weekly routines and how to achieve this; for example walking or cycling to school, a daily active mile or other forms of regular, vigorous exercise

Healthy eating

  • what constitutes a healthy diet (including understanding calories and other nutritional content)
  • the principles of planning and preparing a range of healthy meals

Supports the PSHE curriculum: Core Theme 1 (Health and wellbeing)

H1 - about what keeping healthy means; different ways to keep healthy

H2 - about foods that support good health and the risks of eating too much sugar

H3 - about how physical activity helps us to stay healthy; and ways to be physically active everyday

PE

  • master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities

Mathematics

  • measure and begin to record time
  • count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals; count in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s

English

  • apply phonic knowledge and skills as the route to decode words
  • respond speedily with the correct sound to graphemes (letters or groups of letters) for all 40+ phonemes, including, where applicable, alternative sounds for graphemes

Learning objectives

After taking part in these activities, pupils should:

  • understand the importance of eating well
  • understand the importance of being active
  • be able to explain how to keep themselves healthy
