What is wellbeing? – KS1 and KS2 assembly

Developed with teachers and NHS-approved, this assembly explores how physical and mental wellbeing are an important aspect of our overall wellbeing.

Pupils consider how other young people might look after their wellbeing, and learn breathing and visualisation exercises.

A "Guidance for teachers" document contains details on how to link this assembly to school-wide approaches in place around social and emotional learning.

Curriculum

Supports the Relationships and Health Education curriculum

By the end of primary school, pupils should know:

  • that mental wellbeing is a normal part of daily life, in the same way as physical health
  • the benefits of physical exercise, time outdoors, community participation, voluntary and service-based activity on mental wellbeing and happiness

Supports the PSHE curriculum

KS1 – Pupils learn:

  • H17 – about things that help people feel good (for example, playing outside, doing things they enjoy, spending time with family, getting enough sleep) 
  • H18 – different things they can do to manage big feelings, to help calm themselves down and/or change their mood when they do not feel good

KS2 – Pupils learn:

  • H18 – about everyday things that affect feelings and the importance of expressing feelings
  • H20 – strategies to respond to feelings, including intense or conflicting feelings; how to manage and respond to feelings appropriately and proportionately in different situations

Learning outcomes

After this assembly, pupils will understand:

  • what wellbeing is
  • that our physical and mental wellbeing are an important aspect of our overall wellbeing
  • that there are actions we can take to look after our physical and mental wellbeing
