Maths lesson Powerpoints – Sugar Smart World

Developed with teachers, these lesson plans introduce pupils to Sugar Smart World and the Sugar Cube Invaders.

Pupils look at how much sugar is in some everyday food and drink, and use their maths skills to find healthier swaps.

KS1

  • adding and subtracting 1-digit and 2-digit numbers to 20
  • solve single-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations
  • use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most and least
  • solving problems with addition and subtraction

Lower KS2

  • solving problems involving all 4 operations
  • recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables
  • recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12×12
  • multiply 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number using formal written layout

Upper KS2

  • multiply and divide numbers mentally, drawing on known facts
  • solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and a combination of these
  • solve multi-step addition and subtraction problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why

Learning objectives

After completing these lessons, pupils should be able to:

  • explain that different foods and drinks contain different amounts of sugar
  • identify some everyday sugar swaps you can make
  • solve problems using 2 or more of the 4 operations
