Early years lesson PowerPoint – Sugar Smart World

Developed with teachers, this lesson introduces pupils to Sugar Smart World and the Sugar Cube Invaders.

Pupils look at how much sugar is in some of our everyday foods, and use their maths skills to find healthier swaps.

Use this early years PowerPoint to teach pupils about healthier choices and improve their understanding of numbers and quantities.

Curriculum

Early years foundation stage

Mathematics

Numbers: children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is 1 more or 1 less than a given number.

Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract 2 single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

Shape, space and measures: children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects, and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes, and use mathematical language to describe them.

Learning objectives

After completing these lessons, pupils should be able to:

  • explain that different foods and drinks contain different amounts of sugar
  • identify some everyday sugar swaps you can make
  • compare quantities of sugar in different items
